Know-how in handling Vacu kits

HSV kits are Vacu kits and are produced in small series using the "thermoforming process", which is why they are also referred to as Vacu kits. They differ significantly from kits from large manufacturers (e.g. Italeri or Revell), which are produced using the "injection moulding process". The assembly of Vacu kits requires a certain amount of modelling experience, which is why this type of kit is not recommended for modelling beginners.

In the thermoforming process, a plastic sheet is stretched over a mould and heated until it is soft and easy to shape. In this state, the material is then drawn into the mould using negative pressure (vacuum) and held in place while it cools. This process is particularly suitable for the production of small series and, despite the spread of resin kits, is still an essential component in modelling today.

Tools required for assembly:

  • Cutting mat
  • sharp, pointed modelling knife
  • Fretsaw with fine teeth
  • Sandpaper in various grit sizes
  • Adhesive tape
  • Plastic glue (as for injection moulding kits)
  • Filler
  • Modelling paints
